Which version of Microsoft Project do I have?
We get asked this question regularly and when booking a Microsoft Project training course it is very important that you identify correctly the version of Project that you are using.
The simplest answer is that if you are opening Project from your desktop then you have one of the On-Premise versions. Or, if you are opening Project from a web browser then you are using either Project for the Web (Plan 1) or Project Online (otherwise known as the Project Web App) which come with either the Plan 3 or Plan 5 subscriptions.
If you have one of the 'On-Premise' standalone Microsoft Project versions (such as 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 or the Project Online Desktop Client) then courses breakdown in to traditional beginners, intermediate and advanced courses.
However, if you are using Project Online, then this is a more involved and demanding Enterprise solution which is more complex and powerful than its predecessors and requires a completely different set of courses. You will need either a two to three-day Introduction to Project Online for Users course or a four-day Project Online for Administrators training course.
What is the difference between Project for the Web and Project Online?
In a nutshell, Project for the Web is simpler to use and more intuitive, whereas Project Online is more complex and gives you more advanced control over more sophisticated projects and programmes with a seemingly infinite array of configuration possibilities. That said, Project for the Web is growing in functionality and integrates seamlessly into Microsoft 365 and you can create your own custom project solutions with Power Apps and Power Automate.
